Brass Stem Banquet Lamp c.1930
This brass stem banquet lamp has a lovely hand painted and gilded font, an unusual brass stem and a simple etched globe shade.
The custard glass font features a repeated motif of yellow toned flowers with green leaves. Fine gilded lines adorn the top rim of the font and outline the petals. Further gilded decorations join the flowers to make a continuous pattern. The custard glass font glows beautifully when exposed to ultra violet light.
The floral theme extends to the brass stem. There are a series of protrusions on the stem that make it look like the stem of a bush that is about to burst into bud. The stem sits atop a heavy, black glazed ceramic base.
A simple etched globe shade with a floral central band completes this brass stem banquet lamp.
It is difficult to precisely date antique English banquet lamps like this one. The shape of the font and the style of decoration suggest circa 1930. Similar fonts and ceramic bases are shown in the 1933 Falk, Stadelmann & Co. catalogue.
Condition
Overall, this antique kerosene lamp is in very good to excellent condition.
There is a small amount of wear to the gilding and a couple of small dents in the brass base but nothing more than is expected for a lamp of this age.
The duplex burner and the shade holder aren’t original to the lamp but neither are they new. The thumb wheels read “ENGLISH MADE DUPLEX” and both turn freely to raise and lower the wicks. The burner also has a working snuffer. The shade holder has a couple of small splits in the upper rim. They are barley noticeable and the shade is still held quite securely.
The etched shade is best described as vintage. It is difficult to date it accurately but we think it is fair to say that it was made in the second half of the 20th century. Possibly during the 1970s but we can’t be certain. Despite that uncertainty, the shade is in excellent condition without any chips, cracks or damage of any kind.
Finally, a new oval bulge chimney completes this antique oil lamp.
This brass stem banquet lamp will look wonderful sitting in the centre of your dining table or on your sideboard. Either way, it is sure to be a welcome addition to your home or your collection.
