We have a bit of a mixture in this antique ceramic base oil lamp. The lamp itself is English but the hand painted shade is American.

The English kerosene or paraffin lamp features a hand painted custard glass font atop a nicely patterned brass stem and black ceramic base. From the style of the decoration and the original square nut on the underside of the base, we believe the lamp dates to around 1900.

The glass of the American shade is very fine and light and it has a fire polished fitter rim. It also makes a very nice ringing sound when it is gently tapped. These properties, along with the style of the shade and the decoration, indicate that it dates to around 1880 – 1900.

Whilst the lamp and shade are not original to each other, they certainly date to the same era. The lemon background and floral decoration on the shade compliments the custard glass font and together, they make a very attractive “marriage”.

The font is fitted with a newer duplex burner and a new flattened bulge duplex chimney.

Overall, this antique ceramic base oil lamp is in very good condition.

Please note that the lamp does not lean – it is just a photographic illusion.

Height to the top of the chimney – 68cm (26.75″)

Height to the top of the shade – 59cm (23″)

Diameter of the shade – 25cm (10″)
