Antique Iron Base Oil Lamp c. 1881
The base of this antique iron base oil lamp was made by Edward Miller & Co. It has been identified as a Miller lamp base “No. 179-1/2”.
On page 86 of Catherine Thuro’s second book “Oil Lamps II”, she shows an illustration from the Edward Miller & Co catalogue from 1881. The lamp in the illustration has the same base as this oil lamp but a different font. The style of collar with the extended shoulder further reinforces the dating of the early 1880s.
The font pattern with this oil lamp is a variation on the ever popular “Sawtooth” pattern. The font with its simple Sawtooth band and frosted bowl is a perfect partner for the base. The black painted cast iron Miller lamp base is nicely decorated with scrolls and floral emblems. Together, the two make for a very attractive antique kerosene lamp.
Finally, the lamp is fitted with a vintage “White Flame” burner and wick and a new chimney.
