Antique Redware Stem Lamp
Originally, this antique redware stem lamp would have had a scene or some other decoration painted on the stem. This type of stem was cheap to produce making attractive lamps that anyone could afford but the down side was that they weren’t very durable. The painted decorations were known to wear off if they were handled a lot and they were also known to chip.
One answer to that problem was to remove all of the decoration and just leave the redware exposed as was done with this lamp. It has now been sealed with clear coat to protect it and keep it looking at its best.
The clear glass font has a lovely shape and impressed pattern. It has been roughened on a lathe to produce a frosted effect on the highlights. The style of the font with the extended collar dates it to the 1880’s.
Finally, a stepped base made of black painted cast iron, a vintage burner and wick and a new beaded top chimney complete the antique kerosene lamp.
Overall, this antique redware stem oil lamp is in excellent condition and will be a great addition to your home or your collection.
