Ruby Flashed Font Oil Lamp circa 1860s
This is an early oil lamp (circa 1860s) with a ruby flashed font and marble base. The font is clear glass with a thin flash, or overlay, of ruby glass. The font has then been etched to remove the ruby glass outer layer to create the lovely patterned bands.
This style of brass stem and the marble base are typical of early oil lamps. The brass used for the stems of these older lamps is thicker than that used in later oil lamps. This generally made them more durable and this one is no exception. It is in excellent condition without any splits or any signs of fatigue. The marble base has grey veins which is less commonly seen. The square nut on the underside of the base is almost certainly the original.
The lamp is complete with a fully operational vintage burner, an older pie crust top chimney and a new wick will be fitted.
Overall, this ruby flashed font oil lamp is in excellent condition without and chips, cracks or damage of any kind. The marble base has a few tiny nicks on the edges and a small amount of discolouration but nothing more than you would expect given the age of the lamp and the amount of use it has had.
This early marble base lamp will be a wonderful addition to your home or collection.
