This lovely antique whale oil lamp is quite early. The Boston & Sandwich Glass Co, Massachusetts, produced this lamp 1845 – 1865. The pattern is now known as Cable and Fan and it is shown in “A Guide to Sandwich Glass – Whale Oil lamps and Accessories” by Barlow & Kaiser (photo 2172).

Also, the glass is quite heavy and it has a sparkle that suggests it might be flint glass. Many lamps from this period were.

Originally, the lamp would have had a very different type of burner. However, as the use of kerosene became more widespread, they were phased out. The “new” kerosene burners were designed so they could be used with both the existing whale oil lamps and new kerosene lamps.

Condition

Overall, this lovely antique whale oil lamp is in very good to excellent condition.

The glass is bright and clear and the pattern is well defined. There are no chips, cracks, bruises or damage to the outside of the lamp but there are some chips to the inside rim of the base. It is hard to tell if this is the way it left the factory or is simply the result of use and the passage of time. The shelf wear on the base is consistent with a lamp of this age.

Finally, the burner and chimney both have some age to them but are certainly younger than the lamp itself.

We are sure this delightful antique whale oil lamp will be a wonderful addition to your home or your collection.
