This lamp dates between 1880 – 1900 and is identified as “Match Holder Base” on page 283 fig (i) of Catherine Thuro’s first “Oil Lamps” book.

On first looking at this antique kerosene lamp, it appears to be very plain, with simple lines and little decoration. It is only when you examine it more closely that you realise it has an unusual feature.

Incorporated into the foot are two recesses for holding matches and below them a rough area for striking the match. This antique oil lamp was produced before the days of safety matches, so it would have been a very handy addition.

The Match Holder Base oil lamp is complete with a vintage burner and a new chimney.

Height to the top of the burner – 26.5cm (10.5″)

Height to the top of the chimney – 42cm (16.5″)

Diameter of the font – 14cm (5.5″)
