Manhattan Student Oil Lamp

Product code - 0473
Sold on 25th January 2014

This is a fine example of an antique student oil lamp complete with an original, turned edge, green cased shade.

Made by the Manhattan Brass Company, it bears patent dates of 1877 and 1879.

Antique student oil lamps (as distinct from converted or reproduction electric lamps) operate in an ingenious way.

The large, tubular section on the side of the lamp houses a removable fuel tank that seals with a spring loaded valve. Once the tank is replaced into the outer sleeve and screwed into place, the valve opens to allow the fuel to gravity feed across to the burner.

The burner is fitted with a circular wick. It is adjusted by rotating the burner itself, causing it to follow the path of the spiral below.

As shown in the photos, there is a tiny pinhead sized dent in the outer tank. It is barely noticeable and only mentioned for accuracy.
