Bismarck Reading Lamp c.1900
The origins of this lovely lamp is undeniable. It has a badge with the words The Bismarck Reading Lamp on the collar and the Kosmos burner has the words Made in Germany.
This style of lamp was produced in Germany and other European countries from the mid 1880s until the 1920s. They were also exported to Australia and advertisements for The Bismarck Reading Lamp can be found in many Australian newspapers from around the turn of the 20th century.
This example is complete with a matching shade.
Condition
Overall, this Bismarck Reading Lamp is in excellent condition.
The lamp and the shade are both free of any chips, cracks or damage of any kind. The lamp has the expected open pontil and the base shows shelf wear consistent with a lamp of this age.
The burner is in good working condition, complete with a new wick. As with many of these integrated burner and shade holder assemblies, it appears that the arms have come loose at some time and have been soldered to make them secure again.
Finally, the chimney has some age to it and could even be original to the lamp. The glass is very thick and there are lots of ripples within it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a makers mark on it.
We are sure this lovely antique oil lamp will be a wonderful addition to your home or your collection.
