This is an unusual antique oriental vase lamp in that it blends a lot of different elements from across the world to produce a very beautiful lamp. From its Japanese porcelain vase through to its heavy brass font fitted with a Hinks Duplex burner, it is undoubtedly a quality kerosene lamp.

The lamp is a product of G. H. Covell who was one of the top merchants in New York. He first opened his doors on Broadway in 1863 and specialised in high quality premises and merchandise. His permanent customers included the Astors, Vanderbilts and others.

To maintain his reputation as a top merchant, he sourced the best components from across the world. He imported Duplex burners from Hinks, England and beautiful oriental vases from Asia. He then had fonts and stands manufactured in the USA and assembled them into stunning oriental vase lamps like this one.

Unfortunately, the original shade has been lost but the replacement is reminiscent of those that were used at that time.
