Bismarck Oil Lamp 1885-1920

Product code - 0654BG

This antique European Bismarck oil lamp is one of the less commonly seen styles.

Instead of the expected all white lamp, it has a lovely emerald green font coupled with the regular white glass base.

The lamp is free blown and the glass is quite light with many tiny air bubbles within it, especially in the green glass of the font. The white base has the expected open pontil mark.

Although the glass is lighter than in many other Bismarck oil lamps, the broad base provides excellent stability.

This style of lamp was first made in Europe in the 1880s and production continued into the 20th century. Lamps like these are also found with English collars but we don’t know if they were actually made in England. They may have been made in Europe for the English market.

Overall, this lovely two colour European Bismarck oil lamp is in very good to excellent condition.

The glass is free of any chips, cracks, damage or repairs, though there is one small burst bubble on the surface of the font. This is “as made” and completely consistent with a lamp of this age.

The lamp is fitted with a Kosmos style burner, wick and chimney and is in good working order. The pattern on the thumb wheel shows that the burner was made by A & P Gaudard, France.

We are sure this lovely antique European Bismarck oil lamp will be a wonderful addition to your home or your collection.
