The style of this antique English duplex paraffin lamp (kerosene lamp) points to it having been made circa 1905. It bears strong similarities to lamps that appeared in catalogues of that period.

The glass font is a lovely pale pink colour with a repeating transfer and hand painted decoration around it. Each brown transfer is nicely highlighted by the four hand painted red petals and the delicate pale blue centre.

The gold painted cast iron base also has a repeated pattern on each panel. The base has a more heraldic theme though, featuring shields and lions. Perhaps it as designed in response to the success of the British Empire in the Boer War only a couple of years earlier.

Condition

Overall, this antique English duplex paraffin lamp is in excellent condition.

The font is free of any chips, cracks, repairs or damage of any kind. The transfer and hand painted decoration is still as good as the day it left the factory without any fading or missing pattern.

The cast iron base is also free of any cracks or damage of any kind.

The lamp is fitted with a vintage duplex burner in good working order. The snuffer and the wick winders work as they should and new wicks have been fitted. A new chimney is also included.

Finally, the shade may be a reproduction but the colour is an excellent match for the font and it both compliments and completes this English duplex paraffin lamp perfectly.

We are sure this lovely antique oil lamp will be a wonderful addition to your home or your collection.
