Central Glass Co. Rib Font Cable Base
This little antique oil lamp is a fine example of the Central Glass Co. “Rib with Scalloped Cable Base” stand lamp.
Central Glass Co. started in 1863 in Wheeling, West Virginia and continued until 1893 when it became a member of the United States Glass Company.
In her first book “Oil Lamps – The Kerosene Era in North America”, Catherine Thuro devotes several pages to lamps from Central Glass Co. On page 210 fig. (a) she shows the distinctive cable design on the underside of the base and on page 211 fig. (g) there is a photo of a lamp with the same font but a slightly different base. Other lamps illustrated on both of these pages have the same base as this lamp.
Condition
This antique kerosene lamp is in excellent condition, only showing minor signs of wear on the underside of the base. This is commensurate with its age and usage.
Finally, the lamp is fitted with a vintage burner which is in good working order. A new wick and chimney are included.
